QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

“I feel heathly. I feel 100 percent. It’s just a matter of entering and going everywhere I can and taking advantage of the opportunities – win on some horses you’re not supposed to win on and win on the horses you’re supposed to win on. I need to just go win.” Bareback rider Ryan Gray telling the Casper Star-Tribune about his struggle to return to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo after injuries kept him sidelined until mid-June. Gray is 26th in the world standings after one month of campaigning.

ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee (class of 1999)
Hadley Barrett did double duty over the July 14-17 weekend. He flew down to Colorado Springs, Colo., from Casper, Wyo., where he was announcing the Central Wyoming Fair & Rodeo, to serve as emcee for the ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductions on July 16, then flew back to finish his duties in Casper that night.

After a five-year hiatus, Ellensburg, Wash., is bringing back the Rodeo Bowl, a college football game tied into the festivities for the Sept. 2-5 Ellensburg Rodeo. Central Washington University
will open its season with a game against Texas A&M-Kingsville at Tomlinson Stadium at noon Sept. 2. “I think it’s just a natural (fit) here in Ellensburg,” said Central Washington football coach Blaine Bennett. “Hopefully, we can get the people involved in the rodeo to get excited about a team from Texas playing here, and hopefully we get the people at the game excited about going to the rodeo that night for the opening ceremonies.”

A team roping and barrel racing event has been scheduled for Aug. 7 at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond, Ore., to raise funds to cover cancer treatment for Dianna Corey, the wife of 1991 World Champion Bareback Rider Clint Corey. For information, call Robin Willis at 541.546.8896. Donations may be made at any Wells Fargo Bank in the “Clint & Dianna Benefit Account”

John C. “Bull” Stokes of Freer, Texas, was presented with the Andy Womack Memorial Award for his extraordinary efforts in making the June 22-25 Rodeo Clown Reunion a success this year at Rodeo de Sante Fe (N.M.). Stokes, 71, was presented the award by Karen Vold.

The American Royal Rodeo is moving from Kemper Arena to downtown Kansas City this year. The Wrangler Million Dollar Tour Gold rodeo will be held Oct. 27-29 in the Sprint Center and augmented by a
Reba McEntire concert on the final day. “The change in venue is intended to bring new excitement and greater attendance to this historic event,” Chairman of the Board David M. Fowler said in a release.

Belinda Herriman has sold the Northern Cross stock contracting firm to Canadian Vern McDonald and the company’s name has been changed to C5 Rodeo Company.

More than $15,000 in property used to put on the Fiesta Days Rodeo in Cave Creek, AZ including tables, chairs and lighting equipment has been stolen from Memorial Arena.  A 1,500-pound storage unit where the items were secured was somehow removed from the rodeo grounds. “This was a coordinated effort,” said
Beth Cornell, treasurer of Desert Foothills Community Association, which produces Fiesta Days. “It’s not something that you go, ‘Hey, let’s go rip that off.’ It would take a flatbed with the ability to winch the storage unit onto a truck . . . and you’d have to get it through the gate, but there was no entry damage.” A reward of up to $500 is being
offered upon approval by the DFCA board.
