COWBOY Rhys Angland is riding high on the hope he will last the eight crucial seconds to clinch a record third Australian Bull Riding Championship.
The reigning national champion will take to the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre arena tomorrow for the 2011 National Finals to battle it out against 120 of Australia’s best riders.
The 23-year-old is currently leading the bull riding standings and said he was eager to get back on the bulls in the APRA Grand Finale after a belated riding season due to Queensland’s recent string of natural disasters.
”It’s such a good feeling to be here on the Coast and I’m ready to compete,” he said.
”The break from riding has allowed me to focus on my health and fitness I am hoping to channel every ounce of adrenaline I have into that eight seconds.
”I’m looking forward to it.”
Angland won his first APRA in 2006 at just 18 and capped off a momentous rodeo season in 2009 when he secured his second Australian title.
As the youngest Aussie to have won the prestigious championship, Angland has been around long enough to know first-hand the risks associated with his chosen sport, having suffered from injuries including a broken leg and back plus a shoulder reconstruction.
But the born and bred bull rider says injury setbacks are the dirt you shake off when you recover enough to pull your boots back on, and he wouldn’t trade anything for the titles he has achieved.
”I prefer the bull that bucks the most to gain the highest points possible,” he said.
“There are a few really good bulls going to be there this week and I hope to ride one of those.”

I had the opportunity to go down to Brazil with Rhys back in October to Bonito, MS and Paulinia, SP. He should have won a bunch of money down there but they called him for having knot holds in his rope when he left the chute in Bonito on the second night. None of us agreed with the call.
Here is one of his rides from down there in Paulinia though. It’s sideways but it’s still a great bull ride!
